“We dedicate ourselves to social justice by developing a critical lens through which we can analyze ourselves and the world.”ĭespite this, Café Con Leche wants prospective members to understand that while all women of color are welcome to join their club, they are focused on serving the “Latinx” community at Scripps. “We intend to raise awareness of diversity and its implications in our immediate community and surrounding areas,” the site reads. According to their official Scripps College website, the organization casts itself as devoted to diversity and social justice.

What’s particularly baffling about this incident is the organization that chose to implement the racist skin color requirement for attendance, Café Con Leche.

However, changing a racist rule did little to quell the public outrage over such a distasteful event, and the Scripps College Administration sent a campus-wide email early Friday afternoon informing students that the event had been canceled due to “safety concerns.” In response to concerns over the college sanctioning an event that featured segregation, a number of students and community leaders voiced their displeasure with the event and Café Con Leche was eventually forced to open the event to all students, regardless of skin color.

However, despite billing the event as a celebration for campus members, event organizers decided it would be wise to limit attendance based on skin color, and specifically updated the since-deleted event posting as for “POC only” – POC standing for "people of color." Last week, the Café Con Leche student organization at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif., had reserved the campus pool for a three-hour event on Friday titled “Drippin In Finnesse.” According to the event’s initial Facebook page, the evening was supposed to be Café Con Leche’s “first ever POC party in squaremont.” One California college found itself in hot water this past Friday after facing a public backlash in response to an on-campus event that initially billed itself as only open to people of certain races.
